Warrant of Fitness (WoF)

The Government has announced changes to light vehicle inspections, which will start to come into effect from 1 November 2026. These changes aim to cut down on unnecessary costs while keeping people safe on the road. They affect inspections for cars, vans, people-movers, trailers and rental vehicles. There are also changes for motorcycles registered before 1 January 2000. Read more about these changes on the NZTA website here.

What is a Warrant of Fitness?

A WoF is a regular safety check that makes sure your vehicle meets the standards required to be driven on New Zealand roads. Most privately-owned vehicles 3,500kg and under need one, that includes cars, utes, trailers, motorbikes, and small trucks.

If you drive a passenger service vehicle, rental, or heavy goods vehicle, you’ll need a Certificate of Fitness (CoF) instead but we can help with those too.

Do I need to book?

At most VINZ sites, you can just turn up with no booking required. It’s worth checking with your local branch first though, as some sites have specific conditions.

What happens if my vehicle fails?

No stress if your vehicle doesn’t pass, you’ve got up to 28 days to get the repairs done and bring it back for a free re-inspection. Just keep in mind that during this period, your vehicle can only be driven to a place of repair or inspection.

Why choose VINZ?

We’ve invested in the latest inspection technology, which means shorter wait times and a smoother, more efficient service for you. No hidden agendas. No hidden costs. Just honest, expert advice from a team that knows vehicles inside and out.

Because at VINZ, we’re all about making driving safer.
